CASE 1: OPEDIX
Merchandise display unit with custom "battery-powered" kiosk.
I travelled to Colorado with the head of Sales & Marketing for Longworth Industries, and experienced the people and the science behind the inception of the OPEDIX Knee Support System. The idea, the technology and the creation of the Knee Support System originated at the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine facility in Vail, CO. While there, we stopped in on several of the leading ski (Christy's, Gorsuch, etc.) and running shops (Boulder Running) and spoke with both merchandising and store managers to discuss the OPEDIX and its fit in their product lineup.
Listening... I listened - and determined what size floor display unit they would allow - and what would work best for their floor footprints. Based on the conversations I sketched a quick idea that matched their parameters - and had rough model ideas before we left the stores. I compiled the information and began putting a plan together for creation of the units. The biggest challenges we faced were:
- We needed a mannequin leg with product - attached to the unit.
- We needed a video that told the OPEDIX story. Had to be in the 1 minute range to make it viable for an in-store setting.
- The video unit HAD to be battery based. Extension cords were a tripping hazard in already crammed stores.
- The units had to fit within a max height (for seeing clients over) width/depth (for maximizing useable floor space.)
We did it. The finished unit received rave reviews from the trade shows it attended and was met with enthusiasm by the stores we shipped units to.
